Systems Engineering is a core capability for Tesco Technology, and this position is critical for shaping the engineering culture as we grow. The systems engineering manager will oversee the development, delivery, availability, and management of systems and services in Tesco.As a Systems Engineer Manager, I will:Discover and implement new technologies that improve functionality, availability, cost efficiency, and security for Tesco's systems.Manage Roadmaps, KPI's and budget related to the technical areas, I look after.Collaborate with other teams across all of Tesco Technology and vendors to ensure service and project delivery.Drive Service Improvements with operations engineering and bring operational excellence.Define simple management summary from complex technical topics and drive logical decisions at all levels within Tesco.System Engineering Skills & responsibilities:Evaluate and recommend appropriate infrastructure products to meet business needsDefine and influence the Roadmap and technical standards, in their own technology areasEnsure security is by design for new and existing solutionsEnsure designs and implementations are documented, have appropriate capacity built in and are highly resilient to ensure smooth transition to operationsUnderstand and adopt appropriately different ways of working for effective and efficient delivery.Awareness or knowledge of emerging technologies within your specialism and keep abreast of wider Infrastructure developments.Leverage existing tool sets and drive adoption of new tools and techniques, to get the best value.Manage resources within the team to ensure the successful delivery of projects whilst maintaining service.Manage the team to identify and resolve issues quickly, address escalations and manage communications to stakeholders.Ensure the team understand and follow IT Service Management processes, Change, Incident, Problem and Risk. Ensure KPI's are kept above thresholds.Maintain relationships with suppliers and hold them accountable for desired outcomeUnderstand what maintenance agreements are in place to ensure continuity of service.Supervise response to major incidents and provide clear post-incident root cause analysis documentationDefine and implement high-impact changes and projects in Infrastructure that could impact your area of responsibility and take proactive measures to ensure service stability.Drive service improvements that are focused on customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.Ownership of technology readiness, to deliver key initiatives/projects within QTC (Quality/Time/Cost).Take ownership of technology readiness to deliver relevant workplace initiatives/projects.QualificationsI should have hands-on experience in:Chef AutomationProficiency in Chef Infra (formerly known as Chef Automate) for configuration management, including recipe and cookbook development, node management, and infrastructure as code (IaC) practices.Experience with Chef Habitat for application automation and packaging.Knowledge of Chef InSpec for compliance automation and testing.Understanding of Chef Workstation and related tools for development and collaboration.Vault ManagementExpertise in managing HashiCorp Vault, including installation, configuration, and administration.Understanding of Vault's secrets management capabilities, such as dynamic secrets, encryption as a service, and secret leasing.Knowledge of Vault's authentication methods, including tokens, LDAP, GitHub, and other identity providers.Experience with Vault's encryption and key management features, including transit secrets engine and encryption keys.Security and ComplianceStrong understanding of security best practices and principles, including encryption, access control, and identity management.Ability to design and implement security controls and policies to protect sensitive data and ensure regulatory compliance.Knowledge of security auditing and monitoring tools to detect and respond to security incidents and compliance violations.Scripting and AutomationProficiency in scripting languages such as Ruby, Python, or PowerShell for automation tasks and tooling development.Experience with infrastructure automation tools and frameworks, such as Terraform, Ansible, or Puppet, in conjunction with Chef and Vault.Ability to write custom scripts and utilities to extend the functionality of Chef, Vault, and ILM systems.Troubleshooting and DebuggingStrong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues in Chef, Vault, and ILM environments.Experience diagnosing and resolving configuration management, secrets management, and data lifecycle issues.Familiarity with logging and monitoring tools to track system behaviour and diagnose performance or reliability issues.Owning the accountability support/delivery and administration effectively, efficiently and independentlyPlan/Organise/Control/Evaluate tasks related to installation and configuration, performance tuning.Ensure resolving moderate to complex (P1 and P2) incidents and problems effectively in a timely manner and available for escalationsResponsible for performing root cause analysis, long-term fix, service improvements and providing technical solutionsResponsible for the design and implementation of complex components of a project module, and change requests.Responsible for providing trend analysis to management to enable them to make informed decisionsWorking in a cross-cultural team and communicating effectively with the team and stakeholdersLeadership & PotentialCollaborate across multifunctional departments to drive forward the development and adoption of existing and new technologies to the infrastructure stack.Collaborate with a wider area or teams to drive overall enterprise design.Motivate your team with clear expectations and provide recognition.Creating a positive and supportive culture in your team by promoting teamwork work-life balance.During volatile and uncertain situations able to anticipates and overcomes obstacles with a pragmatic approach to achieve goals and commitments.
